Raising teenagers presents a paradox
You are caring for a not-yet-adult who still needs nurturing
At the same time,
You are living with a no-longer-child who rejects your helpful attempts
Teenagers cannot see the sacrifices you make for them
The thought and effort you put into every day goes unappreciated, or even vilified
It can be hard to accept parents for being people too
Teenagers may not fully understand their experience,
Stress, anger, anxiety, or depression cannot find words
They end up feeling alone and misunderstood
Even though you are within arm’s reach
Some things cannot be heard from one’s parents
This is where a therapist can help
